United Kingdom Life Science Trend Analysis 2026

The 2026 United Kingdom Life Science Trend Analysis, produced in partnership with BioUK, One Nucleus, and HIRANI, highlights one of Europe’s largest and most established life science ecosystems, with deep biotech and pharma roots, a broad services infrastructure, and a dynamic pipeline spanning oncology to anti-infectives.

The ecosystem includes 1,604 biotech companies, 378 medtech firms, 272 digital health companies, and 478 investor companies. Among biotech companies, R&D services leads with 783 firms (49%), followed by therapeutics & diagnostics with 571 companies (36%). The dominant modalities are small molecules (20%), immunotherapy (9%), and antibodies (8%), with anti-infectives (8%) and drug delivery (7%) also featuring prominently. Oncology accounts for the largest share of clinical assets (700), followed by infectiology/parasitology (214) and neurology (162). The pipeline spans all development stages — preclinical through Phase III — with 1,778 total assets available for out-licensing, of which 1,132 are therapeutics.

Geographically, England accounts for the vast majority of companies (3,836 out of 4,665), with London and the Golden Triangle serving as the primary hubs. Scotland (229 companies) has a notably biotech-heavy profile at 49% of its total base, while Northern Ireland (207 companies) stands out for its relatively high proportion of supplier & engineering and digital health firms. Wales contributes 187 companies with a strong medtech presence at 17%.

Financing activity reflects a recovering market following a prolonged contraction. Private equity rounds for life science companies totalled $2,839M in 2024 and grew to $2,922M in 2025, with biotech companies specifically attracting $2,316M and $2,372M respectively. The five-year dataset shows a sharp peak in 2021 H1 ($1,975M across 66 rounds), a significant trough through 2022–2023, and a sustained recovery from 2024 onwards. The top 2025 private equity rounds were led by Isomorphic Labs ($600M), Verdiva Bio ($410M Series A), and Artios Pharma ($151M Series D). On the M&A front, the UK’s most notable 2025 deals included the acquisition of Verona Pharma by Merck & Co. for $10B, Vicebio UK by Sanofi for $2.1B, and OrganOx by Terumo Corporation for $1.5B, underscoring continued international appetite for UK biotech assets.

Looking ahead, the UK life science sector is supported by a deep out-licensing pipeline, a broad therapeutic modality landscape, and recovering venture financing — positioning it as one of Europe’s premier life science hubs, with continued momentum across therapeutics, medtech, and digital health.
