Maxim Healthcare Services Names National Caregiver of the Year
By: PR Newswire Association LLC. - 25 Aug 2016Back to overview list

COLUMBIA, Md., Aug. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Maxim Healthcare Services, Inc., an established provider of home healthcare, medical staffing, travel nursing, and population health and wellness services across the United States, announced today that Leona Davis, a licensed vocational nurse in its Gardena, California, office is this year's National Caregiver of the Year Award winner. Leona was honored by her colleagues and the Maxim leadership team during a special caregiver appreciation ceremony on August 24.

"Our caregivers are more than experts in their field; they are often a part of our patients' extended families," said Bill Butz, Maxim Chief Executive Officer. "Leona truly exemplifies Maxim's Purpose Statement – Caring, Serving, Enriching Lives – and we are proud to celebrate her commitment to delivering outstanding, quality patient care."

In 2006, Leona began working with a 13-year-old patient with a rare nervous system disease. Since then, her patient has outlived his three- to five-year life expectancy, thanks in part to the quality care that she provides.

Leona has become a trusted resource for the patient and his mother, assisting with daily activities like bathing, dressing, feeding, and medication management. In a special tribute video shown during the award ceremony, the patient's mother said Leona's nomination for Caregiver of the Year was very well deserved. "Thank you so much for being there for me and [my son]," she said. "She doesn't make me feel like I'm all alone here doing this."

During her 10 years with the patient, Leona faced her own struggles, as well. She was diagnosed with cancer last year and returned to work immediately after her radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

"Leona's dedication and selflessness has undeniably positively impacted the lives of this patient and his family," said Maxim Chief Experience Officer Julie Judge. "We are so honored to have her in the Maxim family and are grateful to be able to share her inspiring story with others."

After receiving the national award, Leona stated, "I love my job. I love my patient."

Maxim's Caregiver of the Year Award program was established in 2011 and is designed to enhance the caregiver experience at Maxim and acknowledge and celebrate Maxim's nurses and aides for the outstanding work they do to deliver quality patient-centered care and service to many of the nation's most medically fragile and chronically ill patients.
