Mammograms, Massages & You event at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital focuses on comprehensive women's health

HOUSTON, July 22, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- An understanding of steps to take towards health improvements is one of the tools women can use to become empowered in making their health a priority. Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital recently held a free women's health event, Mammograms, Massages & You, to provide education about the latest advances in breast health, common urinary issues, pelvic floor therapy, HPV and other women's health-related issues.

"We featured physicians from all disciples to answer questions women may experience, but may be too embarrassed to talk about," said Julie Brewer, PT, DPT, BCB-PMD, pelvic floor physical therapist, Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital.

Event attendees received free chair massages and a cardio boost was provided by Houston Methodist Wellness Services. Pelvic floor physical therapy experts gave presentations and a question and answer panel included physicians who specialize in obstetrics and gynecology, gynecology oncology, hematology, urogynecology, breast surgical oncology and plastic and reconstructive surgery. During the panel, attendees were encouraged to be proactive in their health and engage in a healthy lifestyle.

"The most important thing a woman can do to take control of her own health is to be her own advocate," said Brewer. "Don't be afraid to bring up your concerns to your doctor. More than likely they've heard these things before and it's very common."

Additionally, guests were invited to tour the Breast Care Center, meet diagnostic breast care and oncology nurse navigators, and schedule a screening mammogram. The women's health event is an extension of Paint the Night Pink, an annual women's breast health event at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital during October.
