PORTLAND, Ore., July 7, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- OCHIN, Inc., one of the nation's largest nonprofit Health IT and professional services organizations, announced today that it has selected CareAccord, the state of Oregon's Health Information Exchange (HIE) and health information service provider (HISP), as its provider of Direct secure messaging services for its community of more than 9,000 physicians and associates.

Currently, there are 88 OCHIN member organizations using the hosted Epic platform across the nation, including Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) and safety net clinics; 32 of these organizations are in Oregon alone. OCHIN provides its member organizations with business, research, data aggregation, and analytics services. In addition to improving communication among providers and reducing duplicate lab orders, the HISP will also support the requirements of Meaningful Use.

"We are excited to partner with OCHIN to serve Oregonians and those within the health care community, further facilitating the coordination of care for individuals and families," said Susan Otter, Director and State Coordinator for Health Information Technology. "As a result of this partnership, OCHIN organizations will be able to securely exchange patient information, allowing them to attest to federal meaningful use requirements and qualify for incentives from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services."

"OCHIN is a national leader in Health Information Exchange," said Abby Sears, OCHIN's Chief Executive Officer. "Adding direct messaging provides our users with one more avenue to exchange information with other health care professionals across the country. We are already moving 300,000 patient records into our EHR and 300,000 records out to 197 different organizations. Supporting the development and adoption of another HIE tool across the country will continue to drive data where it needs to be. We expect be one of the biggest users of CareAccord within the first 12 months, further improving the liquidity of data, improving care for patients, and helping to extend the HISP to more organizations."
