PALM SPRINGS, Fla., April 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Orchid Recovery Center, a women-only rehab facility in South Florida, aims to address trauma such as physical and sexual abuse and childhood neglect, which are shown to be contributing factors in developing drug and alcohol addiction later in life. Orchid focuses on holistic healing treatments for women dealing with addictions in order to strengthen a woman's body, mind and spirit.

The National Institute of Health, along with several leading universities including the University of Texas, has studied the correlation between early trauma and addiction. Physical and sexual abuse as well as neglect occurs at alarmingly high rates and is considered a major public health problem in the United States. Department of Justice research has shown that one in three women are victims of sexual abuse compared with one in six men. Studies have shown that there is a strong relationship between adverse childhood trauma and subsequent drug and alcohol use as well as poor mental health outcomes. The University of Texas study showed how changes in the brain as a result of childhood trauma may make people more susceptible to addiction and depression.

Addiction also manifests differently for women, a belief at the very foundation of the Orchid Model. Based on the belief that women have different physical, emotional and psychological needs to overcome addiction, Orchid was founded to meet the unique needs of women that were not being addressed by the recovery community. Women addicts often have more guilt, shame and other mental health issues when compared to men, and when there is untreated trauma women often turn to drugs and alcohol to cope. They are also less likely to seek treatment because of the social stigma and guilt associated with identifying as an addict.

"Women often internalize trauma," says Peter A. Harrigan, CEO of the Orchid Recovery Center. "When early trauma is left untreated, it affects a woman's self-esteem, emotional well-being or ability to cope, which can lead to unhealthy choices, chemical dependency and chronic relapses."

The Orchid's treatment programs help guide women through a journey of growth and healing specifically tailored for each individual. Treatment is conducted in an environment of trust, where a woman's voice is heard and respected, which provides a sense of safety that most victims of trauma have not experienced prior. Developing this safe environment is essential for a woman to take the initial steps necessary in dealing with her untreated trauma and addiction.

The Orchid utilizes the groundbreaking treatment programs developed by Dr. Karen Dodge, known as "relational growth", which found that women overcome addiction faster and more completely when they are supported by a community of other women who are experiencing the same issues and facing the same challenges related to alcohol or drug addiction. At Orchid, women provide support to their peers and expert counselors and therapists facilitate holistic treatment programs tailor made specifically for women to improve all aspects of their lives.

Conscious eating, regular exercise and participation in spiritual work such as yoga therapy, meditation and Twelve Step meetings are all parts of the Orchid Model. The Orchid holistic treatment approach aims to provide an opportunity for women to break the cycle of addiction and enjoy healthy, contented and productive lives.
