Reproductive Medicine Associates of New York Demonstrated that Chromosomally Normal Embryos Lead to Healthy Babies, Even if the Embryos are Given a Poor Grade Based on Morphology

NEW YORK, Oct. 24, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Reproductive Medicine Associates of New York (RMA of New York), a leading Manhattan-based fertility center, presented data from a retrospective cohort and case control study analyzing the relationship between the transfer of embryos deemed "poor quality" by morphological grading, and the potential impact on gestational age at delivery and infant birthweight.

The study reviewed a total of 420 frozen single embryo transfer cycles resulting in a live singleton birth and found no association between embryo morphokinetics and adverse perinatal outcome.

Lucky Sekhon, MD, the first author of the study and a fellow in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, commented:

"We were able to demonstrate that embryos deemed "poor quality" by morphologic grading were not associated with a decrease in gestational age or birthweight at delivery. It is possible that by adopting a strategy of biopsy, freezing, and thawing embryos, we are able to synchronize the embryo and the endometrium, optimizing the implantation of developing blastocysts."

Cycles were stratified based on the Gardner-Schoolcraft grading system for blastocyst expansion, inner cell mass and trophectoderm. Patient age, BMI, endometrial thickness at transfer, gestational age at delivery and neonatal birthweight were recorded, and student's t-test, chi-square and linear regression were used for analysis. Patients were stratified into birthweight categories (low birthweight and macrosomia) and a binary logistic regression was used to identify whether morphokinetic factors were predictive of either outcome.

The study is one of 33 scientific abstracts that were presented by the renowned center at this year's ASRM, where the RMA of New York team of fertility experts gathered to share progressive data trailblazing the field of reproductive medicine.
