American Osteopathic Association Names Kevin Klauer, DO, EJD, FACEP, as Chief Executive Officer

CHICAGO, March 20, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the professional membership organization for the nation's more than 145,000 osteopathic physicians (DOs) and medical students, is pleased to announce that its board of trustees has appointed Kevin Klauer, DO, EJD, FACEP, as chief executive officer.

Dr. Klauer will begin on or before May 31.

As CEO, he will have primary responsibility for strategy, operating results, continued organizational growth and advocacy for the osteopathic profession. He will work with the board of trustees, affiliated associations and staff to advance the organization's strategic vision and execute its programs.

"As an osteopathic physician, I am humbled, and so very proud, to serve the osteopathic profession, the American Osteopathic Association, our current and future members, and all osteopathic physicians and medical students.  As one of many priorities, I have accepted the charge to enhance and ensure the value of AOA membership and chart a successful course for our profession's future," said Dr. Klauer. "Advocating for the osteopathic profession is a passion, not a job. I look forward to committing 100 percent of my time and efforts in support of the AOA and its important role with the osteopathic profession and our nation's health care delivery system."

"We are thrilled for Dr. Klauer to join the AOA as our next CEO," said AOA President William S. Mayo, DO. "The DO profession is undergoing significant growth, with approximately one in four medical students attending a college of osteopathic medicine. This is a pivotal moment for the osteopathic profession and health care overall, and we are confident in Dr. Klauer's experience to lead us through a dynamic and evolving landscape."

Dr. Klauer joins the AOA from TeamHealth, a leading clinician services organization, where he most recently served as chief medical officer for hospital-based services, chief risk officer and executive director for the patient safety organization. He is a clinical assistant professor at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine.

Prior to his arrival at TeamHealth in January 2015, Dr. Klauer spent 15 years with Emergency Medicine Physicians, Ltd. (EMP), serving in many capacities. He was also a member of the board of directors for Physicians Specialty Limited Risk Retention Group and the EMP Medical Group board of directors.

Outside of full-time professional work, Dr. Klauer is involved in and has been recognized by numerous healthcare organizations. He was recognized by the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians with the 2018 Outstanding Educator of the Year award. Dr. Klauer was elected to the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) board of directors in October 2016 and he previously served as ACEP Council Speaker.

Dr. Klauer also serves as the medical editor-in-chief for ACEP Now, ACEP's monthly publication, and was editor-in-chief for Emergency Physicians Monthly. He has received the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA) Robert Dougherty ACEP/EMF Teaching Fellowship as well as the ACEP National Faculty Teaching Award. In 2014, Dr. Klauer was the recipient of the American College of Emergency Physicians Honorable Mention Outstanding Speaker of the Year Award and was recognized by the Ohio Chapter of ACEP with the Bill Hall Award for service.

Dr. Klauer earned his DO degree from the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He also holds an Executive JD, with honors, from Concord Law School.
