Marler Clark Commends New PIRG Report

SEATTLE, Jan. 17, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Marler Clark, the Nation's Food Safety Law Firm, commends the United States Public Interest Research Groups (PIRG) research on the food safety system. Today the PIRG released a report How Safe is Our Food? detailing how fundamental flaws in our food system have led to a rise in recalls and outbreaks since 2013.

Marler Clark represents hundreds of individuals who were affected by food poisoning in 2018 alone. One key finding in the report was that archaic laws allow meat producers to sell contaminated products. It is currently legal for meat producers to sell meat that tests positive for Salmonella, as it is not labeled as an adulterant under law. This year over 12 million pounds of meat were recalled by JBS Tolleson because of a virulent Salmonella strain causing 333 illnesses across 28 states. Studies such as this underline the need for change in regulation of our food safety system.  In addition, over 300 people were sickened and five died as a result of eating E. coli – tainted romaine lettuce in 2017 and 2018.
