EXPERT ALERTS:

February is Heart Month: 7 Steps to Let Go of Damaging Emotions
Dr. Bradley Nelson
Holistic Physician and Author
Dr. Nelson can share seven steps to let go of damaging emotions: "1) Write a letter to the person you need to forgive. It helps you express angst and negativity that might be in your soul about yourself or another person, even if you don't mail the letter. 2) Burn the letter. Take the letter outside and light it with a match, burn it up, and send it out to the universe. That can really help you to let go and forgive. 3) Speak forgiveness. This can be telling yourself or another person that you truly have forgiven yourself or the one who wronged you. This helps seal the forgiveness. 4) Strive for a state of acceptance and understanding of others, despite their negative behavior or difficult nature. The higher path of the spirit is to be at peace with the universe and with all our fellow beings. None of us are perfect, and we all have reasons for acting the way we do. 5) Don't forget to go easy on yourself. How many times have you chastised yourself for making a poor decision, lashing out at others, being clumsy, or running late for a meeting? Most mistakes we make won't affect us in the long run. In fact, by recognizing the value in our own folly, we can learn some of life's most valuable lessons! 6) Choose positive emotions. You are the pilot of your own course in life, and you can choose to make intelligent and balanced decisions. When you find yourself automatically being guided toward the emotion of anger, for example, wait a few seconds and ask yourself if it would better serve you to change course. The ability to choose more positive emotions is something all of us have, but it's like a muscle that needs regular exercise in order to serve us best. 7) Release emotional baggage. You can lower your stress level by getting clear on the underlying causes of negative emotional choices and nagging, negative thoughts."
Dr. Nelson is a holistic chiropractic physician, a medical intuitive, and one of the world's foremost experts in the emerging fields of bioenergetic medicine and energy psychology. His bestselling book, "The Emotion Code," is helping people all over the world to improve their lives easily and quickly. Users of "The Emotion Code" have found freedom from emotional problems such as depression and anxiety, as well as physical problems including fatigue, pain and disease. A key element of "The Emotion Code" is removing emotional energies that have clustered around the heart, interfering with one's ability to find love and success. Dr. Nelson has coined this cluster of emotions the "Heart-Wall," and it has been called "the most important discovery in the history of energy medicine." He has trained thousands of practitioners worldwide to help people overcome unresolved anger, depression, anxiety, loneliness and other negative emotions and the physical symptoms associated with them.

5 Tips for Navigating Negative Interactions
Dr. Shamini Jain
Clinical Psychologist, CEO
The Consciousness and Healing Initiative (CHI)
Dr. Jain can offer five tips to navigate negative interactions: "1) Acknowledge and make peace with your feelings: The first thing to do is to acknowledge and make peace with the negative feelings that you are feeling, and breathe through them so that you don't escalate the negativity. Stay grounded in your body and just breathe, feeling your feet on the ground until your negative feelings aren't overwhelming you. 2) Talk through your feelings: If you feel comfortable, talk through your feelings with the person. Be sure to focus on *your* feelings, not accuse the other person. For example, consider saying something like, 'I've worked really hard on this project, but when I hear you talk about my work, it sounds really critical to me and that makes me feel upset,' versus 'You are constantly criticizing me and my work and making me angry.' 3) Give yourself some space: "If you don't feel comfortable talking about the situation with the person, the best thing to do is to take space from that person until you feel that you can have a conversation about the issue. 4) Embrace silence, get grounded, and breathe: If neither talking through things nor taking space is possible, the best thing is to stay in the situation silently and breathe through your discomfort by staying grounded in your body until you can take space. If you engage back with negativity, you're just feeding the negative cycle and that won't help you or the situation long-term. 5) Cultivate compassion: Also consider that people who are in pain and who are depressed may have more negative thinking and negative behaviors, and sometimes their negative self-talk extends out to others in forms of rude comments or behavior. If you encounter negative talk or behavior like this, you can take time to consider what this 'negative person' might be going through in his or her life, and see if you can cultivate some compassion for that person. It will help you deal more effectively with the negativity that is present."
Dr. Jain is a psychologist, scientist, and social entrepreneur. She is the founder and CEO of the Consciousness and Healing Initiative, a nonprofit collaborative accelerator that connects scientists, health practitioners, innovators, and social entrepreneurs to advance the science and practice of healing. She also serves as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Jain was trained in neuroscience at Columbia University and in clinical psychology and psychoneuroimmunology at UC San Diego. As illustrated in her TEDx talk, Dr. Jain has a natural gift for translating difficult scientific concepts into easily understandable, practical action steps. Dr. Jain is on the board of directors of Greenheart International, Modern Spirit, and Leap Forward. How Magnets Work With Acupressure
Susan Shane, L.Ac.
Licensed Acupuncturist, Author
Hand Energetics
"Having access to the ancient knowledge from this acupuncture system remapped onto the hand is incredibly beneficial. Learning how to use that knowledge with the modern magnet technology really allows people to feel better, to tune in to what's there and what's going on for them, and to make adjustments when there's something that is out of balance. Once you start experiencing that, it's really wonderful. Theories explaining how these magnets balance the body include: 1) Magnets have intrinsic ferromagnetic properties that increase blood circulation. 2) Magnets react with cells, inducing ion exchanges which increase oxygen and blood circulation. 3) Magnets produce a slight electrical current which helps nerves react, producing the body's natural pain killers, beta-endorphins."
Shane graduated magna cum laude from Emperor's College of Traditional Oriental Medicine in Los Angeles, and has been a California and nationally licensed acupuncturist since 1994. She is the designer and primary mover of a series of powerful, accessible wellness tools: the Hand Energetics program and "Vitality Fusion: a Comparative, Interactive Survey of Western, Chinese and Ayurvedic Medicine," which includes the ExAIRcise approach to physical movement. Besides her master's degree in acupuncture and Chinese herbology, she holds a B.A. in theater arts and dance. She has participated as a longstanding member of the Community Advisory Board at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in La Jolla, Calif., and has completed postgraduate studies in gynecology with Dr. Yitian Ni. She has been a wellness lecturer at college campuses and corporations, such as University of California San Diego, Chuao Chocolatier, and Qualcomm. The Financial News Network featured her on their "American Entrepreneur" segment, and she has been interviewed by or written articles for New Body, Men's Guide to Fashion, Mature Health, and Mantra magazines. Her professional affiliations are with the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and California State Oriental Medical Association. She has also belonged to the National Sports Acupuncture Association, Aerobics and Fitness Association of America and the International Association of Yoga Therapists. Shane is passionate about teaching others how to be vital and healthy. She looks to empower her audience with personalized tools and techniques that can give everyone a new pathway to optimal health, one in which they are in full control. She currently lives with her husband and the family Vizsla, Amber, in San Diego. For more information, visit www.Handenergetics.com and www.VitalityFusion.com.
