MARSHFIELD, Wis., Aug. 22, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Seq2Know, a consumer-initiated genetic testing service, is offering Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) testing. FH is a hereditary form of high cholesterol that increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, the first and fifth leading causes of death in the United States, respectively. Approximately one in six adults have high cholesterol (Schober et al, 2007); high cholesterol is caused by FH in about one in every 500 people in the US. Although over 30 million individuals may have FH, many are unaware of their risk (Sturm et al, 2018). The FH Foundations' Consensus Statement on Genetic Testing for FH recommends testing as a diagnosis offers the opportunity to prevent FH-related cardiovascular disease. Genetic testing is especially important for those with consistently high cholesterol, have had a heart attack at an early age, or have a family history of high cholesterol or early onset heart disease. Seq2Know's test includes sequencing of four important genes that cause FH (LDLR, APOB, PCSK9, LDLRAP1). All Seq2Know tests are ordered directly from Seq2Know.com and reviewed by an independent physician network, PWNHealth to ensure the test is appropriate for the individual. Once testing is approved, individuals are sent a saliva kit to provide a specimen for testing.
